MAUREEN McCORMICK

Maureen McCormick is a highly regarded affiliate instructor of the Prosopon School of Iconology and Iconography.  Maureen attended her first iconography workshop with Vladislav Andrejev, founder of the School at Trinity Church in Princeton, NJ in 1996.

Although trained as a secular fine artist (she holds an MFA from the Tyler School of Art, Temple University), Maureen was immediately drawn to the medium and to the mystical theology that informs this centuries-old sacred art of the Christian East. She has coordinated an annual six-day iconography workshop at Trinity Church ever since, is now an affiliate instructor of the Prosopon School, and in March 2013 was consecrated as Trinity’s first Iconographer in Residence.

Maureen moved to the Princeton area in 1986 to join the staff of the Princeton University Art Museum, where she worked for 25+ years. After juggling a satisfying but demanding career with her study of the icon, Maureen stepped down from her position as Chief Registrar to devote herself to iconography.

“Archangel Michael Iconography Workshop with Maureen McCormick”

June 13-18, 2022

Trinity Spiritual Center is pleased to host an intensive, six-day workshop providing an opportunity to immerse oneself in the world of iconography. Following the traditions of the iconographers in 16th century Russia, from June 13 to 18, 2022, students will create icons using ancient techniques and natural materials rich with symbolic meaning: carved wood boards prepared with gesso made from chalk and glue, finely ground clay, pure gold leaf, and ground mineral pigments in an emulsion made from egg yolk. The workshop will also explore the underlying theology of the icon, as each technical step has a corresponding symbolic meaning.

Previous artistic experience is helpful but not necessary since icon ‘writing’ is as much a contemplative form of prayer as an artistic discipline. Each student will complete an icon of the Archangel Michael during the workshop. Step-by-step instructions and all necessary materials will be provided.
